New Method for Disposing of Unexploded Ordnance in Okinawa

(The Asahi Shimbun) A fresh method has been introduced by the central government to dispose of unexploded ordnance from the Battle of Okinawa in World War II. Using a capsule-type container, the government aims to minimize the evacuation range for nearby residents in the event of accidental explosions during disposal.
The Ground Self-Defense Force used a specially designed steel container, known as an "explosion-proof container," approximately 1 meter in diameter. Controlled destruction of fuses was done remotely. Implemented at the Ginowan seaside park site, this method significantly reduced the physical impact of noise and vibration. The trial will continue until March, with expectations of reducing the evacuation area from 88 to approximately 25 meters, lessening the impact on residents and economic activities.
