Recommendations for When Students Return Home

  • Limit the size, frequency and duration of social interactions. Smaller groups are safer than larger groups; fewer interactions are safer than many interactions; and shorter gatherings are safer than longer gatherings. Also, consider the location (outdoors is generally safer than indoors) and the behavior of people at the gathering.
  • Be extra conscientious around persons who are older, have underlying health conditions or are otherwise vulnerable to severe illness with COVID-19.
  • If you’re not planning to return to Harrisonburg after Thanksgiving for the remainder of the semester, use a separate bedroom and bathroom for the first two weeks you’re home, if possible.

Update on Cases
The university observed 4 new positive cases of COVID-19 at the Health Center yesterday, as well as 1 self-reported case, with 0 students becoming considered “recovered,” meaning they were diagnosed as positive more than 10 days ago and are no longer infectious, putting the number of active cases at 26. The number of open quarantine and isolation beds is at 400 out of 443. More information can be found on the university’s Stop the Spread site. Please note, the HELPline is not for reporting noncompliance with health guidance and the Stop the Spread Agreement signed by all students. Please use the LiveSafe app, which goes directly to the JMU Public Safety dispatch.

Stay safe, and please remember that the only vaccine currently available for COVID-19 is solidarity. And download the COVIDWISE app!
