JMU stays on the 'green'

JMU in the Community

by Janet Smith

James Madison University’s sustained commitment to environmental stewardship has been acknowledged in the 2015 edition of “The Princeton Review Guide to 353 Green Colleges.”

JMU is described in the guidebook as “home to the Office of Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability and campus-wide environmental stewardship committees who work on collaboratively coordinating environmental stewardship efforts across campus, advocating for sustainability-driven priorities, and challenging all members of the James Madison community to think critically about their role in achieving the long-term stewardship of Earth.”

Examples of environmental stewardship efforts cited in the JMU profile include the university’s periodic emissions inventory, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum certification of Wayland Hall (a residence hall), an active recycling and composting program, and emphasis on green careers. JMU is home to the E.A.R.T.H. Club and the Environmental Management Club.

“We strongly recommend James Madison University and the other fine colleges in this guide to the many environmentally minded students who seek to study and live at green colleges,” said Robert Franek, The Princeton Review’s senior vice president and publisher.
