JMU events for breast cancer awareness month

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that other than skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women, impacting more than 200,000 women annually. The JMU community is coming together to help spread awareness of the disease throughout the month of October, which is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Events for this weekend include:

JMU Women’s Soccer Pink Out

Friday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m., University Park

JMU women’s soccer returns home after a five game road trip to show support for breast cancer awareness month. The team will be taking on College of Charleston on Friday night in a pink out game where fans are encouraged to wear pink to show their support.

The first 100 students to arrive will receive an exclusive JMU Women’s Soccer t-shirt.  Fans will also have the chance to win JMU prizes by playing soccer BINGO throughout the game.

ZTA’s Race for the Ribbon 5K

Saturday, Oct. 11 at 9 a.m., Festival Conference Center

JMU’s Zeta Tau Alpha chapter is hosting their annual Race for the Ribbon 5K for breast cancer awareness month. Registration begins Saturday morning at 8 a.m. and the race begins at 9 a.m.

Registration is $12 for adults and $10 for children and includes pre-race breakfast and a t-shirt (while supplies last). Racers are encouraged to wear pink and all proceeds go to Zeta Tau Alpha Foundation, which partners with a number of organizations committed to Breast Cancer research. Sign up here

JMU Football Pink Out

Saturday, Oct. 11 at 12:30 p.m., Bridgeforth Stadium

Students and those in town for Parent’s Weekend are asked to wear pink as the JMU Dukes take on CAA rival, Towson at JMU’s Bridgeforth Stadium.

Women’s Soccer Pink Out, Round Two

Sunday, Oct. 12 at 1 p.m., University Park

JMU women’s soccer will host a second pink out game, this time taking on University of North Carolina-Wilmington on Sunday afternoon. Fans are asked to join the Dukes in wearing pink to support breast cancer awareness.
