JMU Archaeological Field School in the American Southwest

Summer 2010: June 1 to July 6
Program Location
The field school is will work at multiple prehistoric pueblo villages on Chupadera Mesa in central New Mexico, near the Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument. The closest town is Mountainair, which is a two-hour drive south from Albuquerque.
Academic Program
Field school students will learn a variety of archaeological methods including excavation, site survey, and laboratory analysis techniques. Students will also take field trips to a variety of places and events of cultural and historical significance in the American Southwest, including the annual Corn Dances at Sandia Pueblo. This program is best suited for students with an interest in outdoor strenuous field work and archaeology specifically.
Instructional methods include lectures, guided tours, field work, journal assignments and/or papers.

Accommodations
Students will reside in a tent camp surrounding National Park Service Ranger house in
the Salinas Pueblo Province, New Mexico. Group meals will be provided.
