London Revealed: An Urban Geography

progphoto_abroad_urban_london

Spring Break 2010: March 6 to 13 (tentative dates)
with class meetings during 3rd block (first half of Spring Semester)

Program Location

London: World city, global capital, historic centre of Britain. By any measure, London is a vital, central, and fascinating city. Its Roman history can still be seen alongside the wealth of vigorous new development. Medieval street plans are occupied by a complex combination of many ethnicities and nations. Deeply English, yet profoundly internationalized, London offers one of the most compelling examples of the reality of contemporary global cities.

Academic Program

progphoto_abroad_urban_london_titleTaught through an Urban Geography course, this program will be a combination of class work and lectures here on the JMU campus for the first half of the Spring semester, finishing the course with a week in London during Spring Break. In the U.S., we will explore the main themes of urban geography, examining a number of cities as case studies worldwide, and introducing the history and character of London. In London, on the busy streets of this great capital, we will be applying and investigating further how a major city “works.” We will explore how it developed, and how it is organized, through field work, tours, and other experiences, getting a flavor of local life along the way.
