Inter-Cultural Practicum in Rome

Summer 2010: May 13 to June 11
Program Location
Program participants will live for a month in downtown Rome, in walking distance of plentiful public transit and of historic structures and neighborhoods in this eternal city. The residence for the JMU program is a short distance from the Vatican, and students will walk through St. Peter’s Square on their way to Marymount International School each day.
Academic Program
The COE Rome Practicum 2010 offers students the opportunity to assist and lead instruction in classrooms at the Marymount International School in Rome, Italy. In addition, participants will spend four weeks living in Rome and visiting cultural centers throughout Italy on weekend excursions. Participants will enroll in EDUC 490 or 501 courses (Inter-Cultural Seminar for Practicum - Rome) during the spring semester 4th block, and 3 credits for the summer session in Rome.
The specific schedule and policies will be provided by course instructors during the seminar.
Instructional methods include field work, journal assignments and/or papers.

Accommodations
Students will reside in apartments in downtown Rome, Italy. Some group meals will be provided.

In addition to the Short-term Application, interested students should submit an essay and two faculty recommendations, one from the department chair (the chair is positioned to provide you approval of application -- dispositions and academic) and one from a College of Education faculty member
who has supervised you in field based experience. Applicants must have a 2.75 minimum GPA, and rising Junior or Senior class standing. Students must complete 1 credit seminar the second block of Spring semester 2010 to prepare for trip. The essay that you will submit with your application materials must be your unique response to the following prompt: Describe a personal challenge that you have faced. Explain the solution you devised to meet the challenge, then discuss the personal growth that resulted from the experience. Your response should be typed and double-spaced and submitted as a part of your application materials.
