Fees and billing for JMU study abroad programs

Please note the following:

  • The non-refundable $500 deposit, which indicates your intent to participate in a JMU study abroad program, is billed to your student account and the payment is used as a credit toward the supplemental program fee.
  • Read the Participation Agreement thoroughly before signing the Intent to Participate form. The Intent to Participate form is the legal agreement between you and the University; be sure you are comfortable with the expectations and responsibilities as described.
  • Before you leave to study abroad, be sure to confirm that all the required paperwork for loans, grants, and scholarships has been received and processed.  Failure to do so may result in late fees and/or a "hold" being placed against your account for unpaid balances.
  • Tuition and fees are due in full prior to departure or by the University's official billing date, whichever comes first.
  • Deposits are non-refundable, non-transferrable, and cannot be deferred to other study abroad programs.
  • All questions about bills and payments should be directed to the University Business Office.
  • General information on financial assistance for study abroad can be found on the oIP web site of Financial Aid/Scholarships.  Specific questions about financial aid should be directed to Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships.
  • Summer 2009 Financial Aid Information
  • Air transportation to and from the U.S. is not included in program fees, nor are expenses for passport and visa application and other personal expenses.
  • Study abroad participants are required to maintain sufficient health insurance coverage and are strongly encouraged to purchase trip cancellation insurance; oIP maintains a list of insurance providers.

Students are personally responsible for:  airfare to and from the U.S., spending money for transportation to and from program site or designated meeting location, housing, and activities during free and unscheduled time away from the program site, meal expenses not covered by the program fees, application fees for passport and/or visas, cost of health, life, travel, and trip cancellation insurance policies, and expenses for medical treatment and medications.
